Here’s when to change your clock for Daylight Saving Time — and why we ‘fall back’ – National

by BBG Hub

Most Canadians will likely welcome an extra hour of sleep in early November as clocks “fall back” with the end of Daylight Saving Time.

The time change will happen at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3, at which point clocks will change to 1 a.m. That means the day will last 25 hours.

The shift means it will be darker for longer in the morning, but the sun will be out “later” in the evening.

Nine things you didn’t know about Daylight Saving Time around the world

Daylight Saving Time has been used in Canada for over a century despite complaints that it’s inconvenient. There are also contradictory claims about whether or not it helps save energy.

The controversial practice was widely adopted in Europe and North America during the First World War as a supposed fuel-saving measure. Modern critics argue that it doesn’t accomplish that goal anymore, because most power grids have become more efficient since the 1910s.

It’s also just a pain to adapt to a time shift in the middle of a chilly autumn.

Various Canadian provinces and U.S. states have flirted with the notion of getting rid of Daylight Saving Time altogether, but it currently remains a part of most Canadians’ lives.

Some communities across the country have opted not to participate in the time-shifting practice, including most of Saskatchewan and several towns in B.C., Ontario and Quebec.

The European Union has also voted to scrap Daylight Saving Time by 2021.

The extra hour of sleep doesn’t come free, though: You’ll have to “give back” that time when Daylight Saving Time returns on Sunday, March 8, 2020.

‘Sexy’ burgers and ‘hot’ Mr. Rogers: The designer behind those viral Halloween costumes – National

by BBG Hub

In an era of frequent internet outrage, Halloween costume retailers stir up fresh controversy every year with outfits that stretch the terms “shocking,” “edgy” or “sexy” to new lengths.

Although trick-or-treating is usually reserved for children, costume parties are still extremely popular among adults — and some companies have found success by specifically putting the “adult” in their Halloween offerings.

Sexy fake news? That’s a thing. Sexy Deadpool? Sure. Did you like the Mr. Rogers documentary? Great, because there’s a sexy female version of that costume on sale now. Oh, and in case you’ve been swept up in the Beyond Meat craze, there’s a costume for that, too.

Perhaps the biggest offender player in the “sexy” Halloween market is Yandy, a U.S.-based lingerie retailer with thousands of risqué, pop-culture-inspired Halloween outfits for women. The company has been responsible for several viral Halloween costumes spanning the last decade, including one inspired by The Handmaid’s Tale last year. They’re also behind such 2019 headline-grabbers as the Nicest Neighbour, Sold-Out Chicken Sandwich and Beyond Burger outfits.

Yandy

The company often courts controversy with its outfits, but the Handmaid’s Tale costume proved to be too much for the public in 2018. Yandy pulled it from its store last year amid outcry over the “sexification” of an otherwise feminist character.

Yandy

Despite the occasional backlash, Yandy has consistently tried to stay on the bleeding edge of pop culture each year with revealing costumes based on current events.

Story continues below advertisement

It’s not easy to stay on top of those trends, but Yandy can turn an idea into a sample costume within about five days, according to Pilar Quintana-Williams, the company’s vice-president of merchandising.

Quintana-Williams says anyone in the company can suggest an idea for a costume, from the marketing department to the warehouse staff.

“We start our process during the summer, looking at headlines and trying to get our finger on the pulse of what’s going on in pop culture,” Quintana-Williams said. She usually adds about 10 costumes to the store’s lineup per year in the run-up to October, which is Yandy’s busiest month.

Her criteria for a new costume are simple: “Is it a fine costume? Is it something that will make people laugh? Does the costume make sense?”

For example, she says she came up with the Mr. Rogers-inspired costume last year after news broke that there would be a documentary and a Hollywood movie about his life. Quintana-Williams sat on the idea until 2019, when Mr. Rogers would be part of the zeitgeist again.

“I think that a lot of people enjoyed it. I think they poked fun at it,” she said. “It’s just a fun character, and the model looked great.”

Yandy’s founder and former CEO, Chad Horstman, shared a few of the secrets to the company’s success back in 2015 amid a flurry of social media attention over Yandy’s “sexy” hamburger, pizza and french fry costumes at the time.

Story continues below advertisement

“The way we think about it is … if a girl walks into a party, are people going to know what she is?” he told CNBC in 2015. “And Step 2 … if she enters a costume contest, does she have a chance of winning?”

Popular and affordable Halloween costumes

Popular and affordable Halloween costumes

Of course, Yandy isn’t the only name in the “sexy” Halloween costume game. There is a wide range of retailers offering edgy, sexy or straight-up offensive costumes for adults at Halloween.

Adult costumes typically outsell kids’ costumes by a ratio of two to one, according to Wyatt Edwards, lead editor at HalloweenCostumes.com.

“I think that ratio is only going to keep skewing towards adults,” he told Global News by email. “Halloween is often seen as a holiday for kids, but children who enjoy Halloween tend to become adults who enjoy Halloween.”

Edwards says Yandy gets a lot of “chuckles and eyerolls” within the industry, but that is “probably exactly what they’re going for.”

“It gets Yandy coverage, and I’m sure every costume company out there would love that,” he said. “But we’d much prefer to get noticed for making quality costumes that make people happy.”

Halloween costume trends tend to follow popular characters in movies, TV and video games, Edwards says. As a result, this year’s most popular costumes include Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones, Pennywise from It: Chapter Two, The Joker and various Marvel characters, especially Captain Marvel and Spider-Man.

Edwards adds that witches, wizards, skeletons, vampires, clowns and zombies are always popular.

Quintana-Williams says Yandy also has a tried-and-true costume: the SWAT Hottie outfit, which has been the company’s No. 1 bestseller every year for the last seven years.

Where to draw the line on a costume

Edwards says his company stocks a wide range of outfits, including “sexy” costumes for adults. However, HalloweenCostumes.com draws the line at anything that might be seen as outright hateful or harmful.

“That changes over time so we’ve certainly removed costumes that we didn’t feel comfortable selling any longer,” he said.

The company faced its own costume-related controversy in 2017 when it pulled an Anne Frank-inspired costume from its site amid accusations that it was making light of the Holocaust.

Story continues below advertisement

Quintana-Williams says Yandy isn’t aiming for those over-the-top outrage controversies like the one around the Handmaid’s Tale outfit.

“The Handmaid’s Tale [costume] was never intended to be anything deeper than coming up with a new version of the costume,” she said.

She added that the company’s goal is simple: to create sexy costumes that women will enjoy wearing.

“We’re always trying to keep it light,” Quintana-Williams said. “It’s a fun day [when] girls can just be themselves, have fun [and] own their sexy.”

Air Canada swaps ‘ladies and gentlemen’ for gender-neutral term ‘everybody’ – National

by BBG Hub

In a bid for inclusivity, Air Canada has decided to greet passengers as “everybody” rather than “ladies and gentlemen” in their announcements.

They will also be switching up their French announcement, changing “mesdames et messieurs” to “tout le monde.”

The flight company shared the news on Oct. 13 in an email statement to media.

“We will be amending our onboard announcements to modernize them and remove specific references to gender,” the statement read. “We work hard to make sure all employees feel like valued members of the Air Canada family, while ensuring our customers are comfortable and respected when they choose to travel with us.”

Air Canada was named one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers for 2019. It ranked among the top 100 Canadian employers, as well as one of Montreal’s top employers this year.

“We want to ensure an inclusive space for everyone, including those who identify with gender X,” the email read, according to La Presse. “The change will be reflected in the transmission of the Onboard Announcement Manual as part of our commitment to respect gender identity, diversity and inclusion.”

Many were up in arms about the change, with some calling the company too politically correct.

Walk on water: ‘Jesus shoes’ filled with holy water sell out in minutes – National

by BBG Hub

A Brooklyn-based shoe company wants their customers to walk on water, like Jesus did.

On Tuesday, MSCHF released a limited-edition sneaker filled with holy water sourced from the Jordan River, dubbed Jesus Shoes.

The price tag? A mere US$3,000. They reportedly sold out within minutes.

The design isn’t at all affiliated with Nike, however. The shoes, New York Post reports, were purchased at retail price and privately re-designed.

The sneaker features the brand’s traditional swoosh check mark, a large crucifix on the top, as well as “MT. 14:25” in writing, which is a reference to the Bible verse Matthew 14:25.

“And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea,” the verse, which tells of Jesus walking on water, reads.

According to the publication, the insoles of the shoe are frankincense-scented. In the Old Testament, God commands Moses to create an Altar of Incense using pure frankincense, an aromatic resin.

Even the box is on brand, with the cardboard showing angel imagery sealed with what looks like the official papal seal, Fox News reports.

The brand’s marketing website reveals plenty of Catholic imagery, including photos of a model praying at an altar while wearing the shoes. As it turns out, the shoes are actually a bigger statement than one of religious belief.

The company’s head of commerce said their intent was to make fun of collaboration culture.

Prince Harry, Ed Sheeran co-star in World Mental Health Day video – National

by BBG Hub

Prince Harry and Ed Sheeran suffered a slight miscommunication in their World Mental Health Day video — but it was all in good fun, of course.

In a video shared to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s Instagram account, Sheeran joins the prince to discuss what he believes to be a pressing issue: their red hair.

“I’ve been trying to write a song about this to get it out to more people,” the singer-songwriter tells the duke. “People just don’t understand what it’s like for people like us — with the jokes and the snide comments. I just feel like it’s time we stood up and said, ‘We are ginger and we are going to fight.’”

The Instagram post featuring the video tagged a variety of mental health-focused organizations, including Heads Together — an organization in which Prince William and Kate Middleton are also heavily involved — the Mental Health Foundation, YoungMinds U.K. and many more.

“Both Prince Harry and Ed Sheeran want to ensure that not just today but every day, you look after yourself, your friends and those around you,” the post’s caption reads. “Be willing to ask for help when you need it and know that we are all in this together.”

Prince Harry to sue more U.K. tabloids over alleged voicemail hacking – National

by BBG Hub

Days after announcing a lawsuit against the Mail on Sunday, Prince Harry has launched another formal legal claim against two other U.K. tabloids over alleged phone hacking.

Claims have officially been filed at the U.K. High Court alleging an illegal interception of voicemail messages.

The defendants formally listed in the lawsuit are News Group Newspapers Limited and Mirror Group Newspapers Limited.

A spokesperson for News Group Newspapers, the parent company for the Sun, has said: “We confirm that a claim has been issued by the Duke of Sussex. We have no further comment to make at the current time.”

There are no additional details as to the nature of the claims, which were first reported by Byline Investigates, but the Guardian reports they were filed by Clintons, a law firm known for dealing with phone-hacking claims in the past.

The documents were first filed on Sept. 27, just a few days before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced formal legal proceedings against the Mail on Sunday and its parent company, Associated Newspapers.

“Unfortunately, my wife has become one of the latest victims of a British tabloid press that wages campaigns against individuals with no thought to the consequences — a ruthless campaign that has escalated over the past year, throughout her pregnancy and while raising our newborn son,” the statement reads.

“Up to now, we have been unable to correct the continual misrepresentations — something that these select media outlets have been aware of and have therefore exploited on a daily and sometimes hourly basis.

“There comes a point when the only thing to do is to stand up to this behaviour because it destroys people and destroys lives,” the statement continues. “Put simply, it is bullying, which scares and silences people. The end of the statement announces that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are specifically filing a claim against the Mail on Sunday and its parent company.

The claim filed against the Mail on Sunday accuses the publication of misuse of private information, infringement of copyright and breach of the 2018 Data Protection Act.

A spokesperson from Schillings, the U.K. law firm representing Markle, said in a statement: “We have initiated legal proceedings against the Mail on Sunday, and its parent company Associated Newspapers, over the intrusive and unlawful publication of a private letter written by the Duchess of Sussex, which is part of a campaign by this media group to publish false and deliberately derogatory stories about her, as well as her husband.

The case, the website states, is being privately funded by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Proceeds from any damages will be donated to an anti-bullying charity.

Prince Harry follows in Princess Diana’s footsteps by walking through Angolan minefield – National

by BBG Hub

Prince Harry recently followed in the footsteps of his mother, Princess Diana, by visiting a minefield in Angola as part of his royal tour in Africa with wife Meghan Markle and son Archie.

In 1997, the late princess was photographed walking through an Angolan minefield. She brought awareness to de-mining efforts in Huambo, and photographs of her visit spread around the world.

As part of his own trip, Prince Harry visited anti-landmine organization The Halo Trust in the town of Dirico.

Prince Harry followed in the footsteps of his late mom, Princess Diana, who famously walked through a minefield in Angola in 1997.

Canadian Press

Wearing a protective vest and mask, the 35-year-old stepped through an active minefield just like his late mother and participated in safely detonating a mine that had been found nearby.

The field visited by the late Princess of Wales all those years ago is now a busy street in Huambo, Time reports. The prince went on to visit that very spot later in the day.

Prince Harry sat in Huambo where Princess Diana once walked an active minefield.

Canadian Press

The prince also made a speech about the importance of de-mining and called for an end to the use of anti-personnel landmines worldwide.

“Landmines are an unhealed scar of war,” Prince Harry said in his speech. “By clearing the land mines, we can help this community find peace, and with peace comes opportunity.”

Ralph Legg, the Angola country director for The Halo Trust, said the impact of the princess’ walk is still a point of conversation today.

“The main impact of Diana’s walk in 1997 was the level of global exposure it provided for landmines not only in Angola but the world,” he said.

“Her willingness to visit an actual minefield, to place herself right in that context, provided great impetus and gave it a great boost.”

After his speech, the Duke of Sussex also went on to visit an orthopedic hospital his mother visited in 1997.

Now on the fourth day of their 10-day trip, the duke and duchess started their tour in Cape Town, South Africa, where they both spoke about gender-based violence.

The couple then met with local organizations offering mental health support to young people and also brought their son to meet with Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
